running Windows 2000, peer to peer network (I think that is what it's called-no server). Need to back up different files on the computers that are connected to this network. I don't even know where to start. I could do this manually but feel that there HAS to be a better way since it needs to be done at least twice a week (I didn't come up with that figure it was given to me). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and please dont' get too technical because I am very extremely new(that means I have no clue).

Thanks!!

Well, if you have no tape drive attached, you can use "Micro$oft file and print" sharing for this.

Install "File and printer sharing for Micro$oft networks" and then set up a share on the one machine, share it on the other machine, and do your backups there.

Have that installed but it there a way to make the back up automatic to something like a cd-r drive? or are you saying to use another computer on the network as the back up? I want to be able to back up or compresss files not just copy files as they are very big (one file is about 450 MB). Is this possible?

Thanks for any and all the help that you all can give me.

Quite honestly, you are asking a car to become a pickup truck.

If you want to do the backup properly, purchase a tape drive from ebay. You'll find one to be fairly inexpensive.

Beyond that, you'll get too complex, plus if the other PC happens to crash, you lose your backups.

Save yourself the grief and get an external tape drive.

Again thanks so much for your help. Will look into getting an external tape drive for this but for now I will back up all file to one computer (only the have to's) and burn a cd). Not that i realy want to but is better than nothing until I get the tape drive. Any recommendations as to a good one that is not outrageously priced? Have to justify the cost to accounting and convince them that this is the best way to go so I won't have to do like I mentioned above forever.

Another question could a server work? I am thinking of a small for an intranet? Have no clue about that either but it is just a thought.

Adaptec has (had?) a program that would allow you to do a backup to a CD-R or CD-RW. It's named Take Two. I use it at home since I'm too cheap to buy a tape drive. :)

The biggest program that you will have with CD's is their speed. A reasonably priced tape drive will outperform a 32X CD-R/W very easily. James P. Cottingham
