I just discovered our tape back up device is toast and I need to get a valid backup. We have a windows 2000 server with a 40gb tape drive that is on the network and I tried to back up the data file directory on the sco machine and got a "cannot make connection" error.

Is there a way to make this work?

Some backup utilities (Backup Exec, for instance) include a server agent for UNIX (including SCO). This is a small utility which is installed on the SCO box and listens for connections from the Windows system during backup time.
If that isn't an option, you have others:

Create compressed tarfile on the SCO box using CRON, then throw it over to the Windows box using FTP (pre-setup required on the Windows box to allow that to occur).

If the SCO box has VisionFS, you can create a mount point to a Windows share and put the tarfile there.

Since both of those options include making a tarfile first, you must have enough free disk space to do so, and you are likely limited by the 2GB filesize limit (depending upon your version of SCO).

how does the w2k box "see" the sco filesystems?
nfs?, smb shares? visionfs shares? somethingelse?

In our shop we use Microlite ( backup utility has the ability to the backups to another server or pc over the network and is fairly easy to set up. The receiving server will have to have a ftp server up and running.
The documentation that comes with this product is quite extensive and easy to follow and the utility price is reasonable.

Hope this helps you

We recently purchased Backup Exec to use with an autoloader to backup one of our remote locations network. The network itself is a mix of Win2K, Win2K3 and a SCO 5.0.7 server. We are now having problem backing up the SCO box. We were under the impression that there was a remote agent for SCO but that does not seem to be the case. However, Motoslide, in your post you indicated that you thought there was an agent available for SCO. Is this truly the case? Are you currently backing up a SCO box with BackupExec using such as Agent? If so, could you point me in the direction of where it might be on the Veritas website? Failing that, is there a suggested method of backing up a SCO box to Windows so that it can be incorporated into a consolidated backup? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

It should be on one of the CD's which came with BackupExec. My problem was that the media included drivers for SCO 5.0.x, but had nothing for 6.0.x. We don't use BackupExec in-house any longer, so I don't have current media.
Here's a link on their website which might help:
