I need to back up primarily documents - some photos and such as well but primarily documents. I have been doing so using CDs but think this is not really the way to go anymore and am considering an external hard drive. Can someone suggest to me what I need to look for or watch out for? How do I determine the right one, etc? Or of course if there are other suggestions for backing up that would be great as well. Many thanks all...

CD's are still a good way to go.... not succeptable to bumping, dropping, power-surges, magnetic fields, etc.

But, pretty much any external USB or Firewire drive will do what you want. OR, if you have an old hard drive laying around, look for an enclosure for it. :)

Just my 2¢

You might consider DVD's. for Data Storage they can hold as much as 4.5GB of information. As said by gbaughma, aren't susceptible to any of the things an external hard drive might be.

And of course are way cheaper than a drive. A media tower of say 50DVD's + one DVD+-RW drive should cost you no more than 60 dollars.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

I use has a USB 250GB external hard drive to store all our photos. We have a second USB 250GB external hard drive I backup ALL data, including the photo drive and store the drive in our safe.

depending on the ammount of data you need to save will drive the type of back ups media you use. CD's & DVD's take storage and cataloging.... a storeable drive is what I prefer.

Thanks tons! All good comments. I may have to rethink the hard drive and just switch to DVD's instead. Thanks again!
