Maybe someone can save me from digging through IBM docs...

i've gotten myself into a situation where a 550 is booting up standalone and is not talking to the HMC that's on the same network as the host's HMC1 port. NE1 know how to reverse the situation so that the box becomes managed by the HMC again? The ASM interface appears to be talking coreectly, btw. i can monitor the system's LED values for example.

i don't care if i lose everything on the box, it's not been configed anyway....

If you know the ASM password you can reset the HMC password from ASM menu.

well the box is not showing up as a managed system when i go into the ASM menu.

ok, i was able to determine the IP addr of the SP with help from support. we then ping'ed & added the host back in HMC control.

on a somewhat related note, can an HMC running at 4.4 be upgraded to 5.1 without a license charge? or would the only choice be 4.5?

No license charge AFAIK. I upgraded from 4.4 to 5.1. I ordered the recovery DVDs and mandatory fix CDROM from the IBM website. Didn't bother to download the DVD/CD images to burn 'em myself...
