I have a small network that I inherited, it is made up of 15 PCS running XP Professional with 2000 Professional acting as file server. They constitute a workgroup. I need to install Advanced Server 2000 with Exchange Server 2000, and eventually add a fax server to it.

I have installed on a new PC with Server 2000 and with all available Updates and named this SRVR1. I can now see all of the resources on the network. (Earlier attempts failed to see other computers).

My connection to the internet is via a cable router (Router1) suppled by TW Road Runner with a static IP. This feeds a Link Sys Wireless Router(Router2) with an active Access Point, the 2000 Professional(Srv1) has 2 HW connections to this router (Don't know why. Any suggestions?)and SRVR1 and PC1 are hardwired via a 4 port hub (Hub2) to it also. There is bridgefrom Router2 for other network connections to an 8 port hub (Hub1).

My real confusion comes in running all of the services such as DHCP, DNS, AD, WINS on the same server. All the examples I find show separate ip addresses for these services. I want to set this up so that I can easily with little downtime migrate the pcs from the workgroup to a domain. ANy suugestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I believe (reasonably new myself) that the things you listed should be fine on the same DC. I dont think you really need WINS being that they are all XP clients, wont hurt anything though.

Cheers.

Unless your bridging connections or something there is no real reason for 2 to be connected. Just use 1. Having both connected and the server using two different IP's will eventually cause problems.

If all the services are running on the same server the single IP is completely logical, don't let the examples throw you off. With the server being a DC (running AD) it will become a DNS server by default. Just remember to configure DNS forwarding to your ISP and the server to point to itself. Also remember to configure the DHCP scopes with entries for DNS, gateway (the router), and WINS if you need it.

If more clients are in your future and even if they aren't I'd look at moving off the hubs and onto switches. There are some really decent inexpensive options out there.

Don't forget about backups. A single tape drive or even some cheap removable storage is nice.

Create new accounts for all your users before migrating the PC's into the domain.
