BACK link instead of the button...

hey peeps,

how would i go about making a back button that works like the back button on the window? i can make a link that says "back" and link it to a page that leads to it. but you can jump from one area to another in my site, thus making a back link useless. i guess you can say that the type of "back" link i want is a "previous page viewed" link. is this possible with simple html? i'm kina thinking javascript is needed.
