I have a laptop and want to connect to our office Novell network from home. I have created a VPN. That works fine - I can ping IPs inside the network. I can use pcAnywhere to connect to PCs running in the Office. I have installed the Novell client on the desktop, but when I try and login, it cannot find the tree.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

try using the full context of the user in the USER box.

something like

.username.context.nextcontext.org

Probably SLP problem. Try using the IP address of a server that has a replica as the tree name.

^^^^^^^^^^^ Good call - for the server name, put the ip address instead. Verify you can ping it first, but that is a great idea. The name of the server is not recognized because SLP is not being routed to your PC and thus the novell service is not recognized.

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried putting server IP address and it worked. As I am not familiar with SLP I will try and get some info to try and understand the best way to deal with this.

Thanks again

The problem is that you don't have SLP routed to your remote computer or it's not configured properly on your PC. In your office, it's "broadcasting" on the network.

Ask your IT people to set the SLP config on your PC if SLP can traverse the VPN, it should work just like in the office.
