Hi,
Here I am, with the same problem.
When I tried to open EPS file created on Mac, on PC (I work in AI CS; answer to Bert's earlier question; regards :) I get this message:
"DCS EPS files cannot openned or embedded.
Please place this file using the link option.
<OK>"
I know that EPS shouldn't be platform sensitive, but, in this case, they are!?
I tried to place it with link option checked, but I get either blank rectangle or low quality picture and no vector graphics or layers!
Come on Bert! I know you can do it! :)
Thanks ahead for any usable post.
Bye.

Does the eps contain text that has not been outlined? If so, do you have the font?

Yes, I do have all fonts, but still...
The problem's with graphics that should be opened as vectors, not rasters.
Any clue?!
Thanks JMG.

If any elements of the image were rasterized, either in ILL or another app - imported into the ILL doc - they'll remain rasters in the eps. Unless you know how the eps was created, you cannot be sure that it's not simply a raster saved in eps format.

Depending on how complicated the thing is, you might want to open it in Photoshop, create paths and export those paths to ILL - giving you back pure vectors.

I get logos sent to me all the time in jpeg format (by corporate types who have no idea about this stuff) and have to do the open in PS, create and export paths to ILL. It's a PITA, but I've found that works best.
