B-Channel & D-Channel

I am aware of the basic architecture of ISDN Bearer Channel and Digital Channel but can any one explain the purpose of routing B-channel opposed to the D-Channel.
 
Although it is possible, the D channel on an ISDN connection is only used for signalling - by default no data transmission travels across it
