[b]Cannot Update W98[b]

For several months I've been unable to update Windows 98 and no longer get notice of critical updates. Neither functions are working. No matter what link I click on, or its location (even within the Mirosoft Site), if it refers to "Windows Update" I get this mssg:

Lost track of everything tried. Briefly: It doesn't update in safemode. The wupdmgr.exe file is in the system, it evidently doesn't get recognized. Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification" is in Add/Remove --don't function.

Anyone else seen this or had this specifiic problem?

Anything unusual about your operating system? Bootlegged installation disk, a customized windows os (i.e. 98lite), running windows on an emulator? What browser are you using?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Nothing unusual. All legal. custombilt 4/99. IE6 Default. FF on board - seldom used. 1 bad cluster.
