I cannot access colour from within InDesign, which I am using for the first time.

Some objects appear in colour when imported, but text created with Word Art appears in monochrome.

Colour options are blanked out and I cannot change text colour.

I did manage to opt for one colour when creating a gradient but could not alter the other colour.

Nothing in any help area seems to explain what is happening.

...can you type out text in indesign and change the color? If not then indesign would need resetting by deleting preference file. If you can then I suspect the imported object you are trying to change is not editable in indesign...if you want word art in indesign then you should try creating PDF from word and import the PDF into indesign...if you want to edit word art outside of word then your best bet is to use illustrator instead and then import into indesign..
