When right clicking on the folder Zfdworkstation -- new -- object -- workstation ,
I get this message "Workstations objects will be create by Zenworks automatic workstation import service"

What does it mean? I am new to Novell. I am trying to add a new machine.

Thanks

The error message is really telling you exactly how it is.. You don't create workstations manually. Instead, you let your ZENworks do the work for you. It's easy to setup and its automatic.

You need to read the documentation about the Workstation Import process. Here is a quick rundown.

-You have a Server Policy with a Workstation Import Policy defined.
-You configure the policy, one of the tasks being to define where the Workstation objects should be created AND where rights are needed to add workstations (Probably the same place in your case).
- You check out the other options and you'll find other interesting things like Worksattion Naming, etc.
-You associate the Server Policy to the Server running the Import Service
-The Import service should be installed on the server mentioned above, and it should be running. You can check this by typing JAVA -SHOW at your console. If one of the applications says "ImportService", you got it. IF not, you don't. You should also have a screen on your server that shows what is happening with the import service.
-The workstations boot up and looks for a DNS Name called ZENWSIMPORT. You should create a DNS record internally for ZENWSIMPORT that points to your Novell server running the import service. You should be able to PING ZENWSIMPORT and it should respond with your servers' IP address.
-The workstation registers with the server and the Workstation Object is created in NDS.

Once the worksation object is created, you have the ability to apply policies to the workstation, such as Inventory, etc.

The Import process is challenging to new people because in some a lot of cases, the logic is different than what's you would see in say, Microsoft world. And Novells' documentation makes a lot of assumptions.

But once you have it running, man, you never have to think about it again. It just works and it works sweet!

What do I need to do from the workstation side, step by step if possible. Thanks.

Load the Zenworks client, reboot, and log in. It's that easy.

It does not work. I followed the steps in the Novell manual with no success. Could someone please show me a real life sample with steps by steps. Thank you.

Is this a new installation of AWIS or has it worked in the past but you're unfamiliar with it?

One thing that bit me on my first install was that I forgot to force the workstations to register on every login. Open ConsoleOne, open the Server policies, select the Workstation Import policy (make sure it is enabled), click Properties. Select the Limits tab, and set the User Login Number to 1 (unless you're managing thousands of clients). Workstations will now register at every login.

Can I suggest you check out this:

Scroll to Desktop Management then scroll to Automatic Workstation Import and Removal and review this information.

Workstation import is fairly easy to understand but there is no point in re-writing the documentation in this forum.

Hope this helps,
Ed

Sorry, I missed the post where you said you read the manual. The biggest problem I had was the client not able to resolve the host name. Try pinging zenwsimport and see if you get a reply. START - RUN - CMD at command prompt, type PING ZENWSIMPORT.

If you get a reply, I would check your import policy. If you do not get a reply, you will most likely need to modify the HOST file or check your DNS server to see how this should be resolved in your network.

HTH,

Ed

I tried all the above steps, but I still don't see the workstation appeared in the container. I installed both the client login and workstation agent and rebooted. Do I need to do the image of the workstation for it to work?

If you had really "tried all the above steps" you would have a working system.

If you will answer the questions that have been asked, and tell us exactly what you've tried AND what the results were, we might be able to help. Otherwise we're just flogging the monkey.

It works now.
Thanks everyone very much for being so patient in helping me.
