avoid 'stale nfs file handle'

anyone know or have a method to avoid stale nfs?

we've try the following but ultimately rebooting..

umount /nfs_path
...
./nfs.client stop
./nfs.core stop
...
kill rpc.lockd
kill rpc.mountd

Thank-you in advance to all those putting in their thoughts, especially on a Friday!
