Not sure if this is best placed here or in the Vista forum. I got a "raspberry" from the AVG forum moderators for some unexplained reason, so no help there...

Experimenting with Vista Business version (for non-commercial use) before I actually activate it, and found that during the install of AVG (free) v8, a Grisoft message popped up to say if I didn't install Microsoft patch KB929547, the whole system might become rather sluggish. Could not download KB929547 without activating the installation of Vista - I am not ready to do that yet.

Reading comments elsewhere, I was lead to believe that installing Vista SP1 would solve the issue. Downloaded it, installed it, and sure enough no message from Grisoft this time. However, looking through the patches SP1 supposedly installs, I see no mention of KB929547.

So, does anyone know if SP1 is really likely to solve this issue or not, and does it secretly contain the KB929547 patch?

Oh, and no "raspberries" please... [lol]

Typical. The moderators there make some others look like pussy cats.

Looking up the details on KB929547 I would say that AVG8 may well be using the suspect driver, possibly as part of the online update process, though M$ admit that the problem is with Vista

But this would seem to be quite a serious thing, unexplained delays cause users to get worried, so I cannot see why this update isn't being offered on Windows update, or that Microsoft don't list affected applications.

Its not listed on my machine either, but don't forget that SP1 is a single update, i.e all the parts are not listed separately.

But as the AVG mods say perhaps the place to take this is Microsoft support, SP1 support is supposed to be free?

Thanks for that Steve...

I was wondering if SP1 would or wouldn't show individual components, as some appear to be visible. But maybe they were automatically downloaded before I put on SP1.

I thought my reason for specifically posting on that forum was obvious. AVG threw up the error message during installation - perhaps other AVG users would have experienced the same or similar issues. Anyway, as you can see, we have democracy in action - the thread has been abruptly terminated, so no one is allowed to discuss it any further. [censored]

I'm in no particular hurry to activate it, so I'll let it run for a couple of weeks and see how it behaves.

Roger,

I looked up your AVG forum thread...what a bunch of self-righteous thugs! For the record, your post seemed polite and professional, I have no idea why they went off on you.

Nobody here is a representative of ANY company to my knowledge, but we do our best to research and help posters using any and all products. I guess that's different than a company-specific forum, but that's no excuse for their attitudes. Best of luck with your problem.

Thank you for your input Tony - glad it's not just me and Steve who thought their treatment regarding my post was unacceptable. However, I shall not dwell on it here...

So far my experimental Vista installation with AVG v8 is working fine although not given it a great deal of work to do yet.

Briefly on the subject of SP1, I had a user's laptop running Vista which had "lost" several services, one of them being Task Scheduler. This came to light when I tried to defrag - wouldn't run. Simply couldn't get it going, but installing Vista's SP1 sorted it. Something worth remembering...
