I have used AVG for over a year now. I currently have AVG Free 7.5. A couple of months ago it started demanding I reboot after each daily update.

I cleaned the registry with Reg Mechanic.
no change.
So.
I repeated the clean with Reg Mechanic and defragged C and then re-installed AVG.

The problem went away for a few weeks but has now re-appeared.

Any thoughts anyone?

Which Operating system are you using? W98 has had a few re-start updates latley you dont get them with XP/Vista.

stduc,

Unfortunately, I have seen it on a number of machines too (using AVG Network Edition, not the free one). On the XP machines, I uninstalled and re-installed AVG and so far that seems to have fixed the problem. I am also starting to see it on two Small Business Server 2003's, tried the uninstall/reinstall, but the problem continues on one of them.

Time permitting I will try to contact AVG and see what their opinion is.

O/S is XP Pro SP2 fully up to date.

AVG is v7.5 (paid) & AVG have nothing useful to say apart from 'try re-installing' and also the really helpful - re-install XP!

This was something somewhere about deleting some of the temporary files to prevent this issue. The existence of the temporary files makes it thinks it needs rebooted.

Cannot remember what they were, but I thought I found instructions on AVG web site.

You may be thinking of this helpful tip on their website.

Update requires restart
If the message appears even though you rebooted, please perform following procedure:

1. Run AVG Control Center - Update Manager - Settings - Advanced tab - use "Delete update temporary files" button.
2. Reboot your PC.
3. Try to update again

It doesn't exactly apply as the update succeeds upon rebooting. I did try it however - to no discernible effect.

I now need to restart XP about one update in 5.

That was it....sorted my similar proble - I check for updates a couple of times a day,and rarely need to reboot - once a month or so, depending on version changes.

The "solution" above worked for a while. Then I got fed up with being forced to reboot, so I downloaded the latest AVG Free, disconnected from the net, uninstalled AVG, emptied my temp folder, re-installed AVG (with all required reboots) and it worked fine for a week and now the problem is back!

Any thoughts anyone or am I lumbered with either switching to another product or living with this?

I think I figured out a fix that worked. At least I haven't had to reboot because of AVG for a couple of weeks now.

I changed the update settings to "Update upon next computer restart...." and waited until it did an auto update.
I re-booted and "deleted temporary files"
Then I reselected "Update Immediately" and "Require confirmation from the user"

This seems to have done the trick - fingers crossed. AVG now auto updates and HAS NOT demanded a reboot since.

Well that didn't last for long and repeating the procedure didn't work either - so I have uninstalled AVG and am going to give Avast a try out.

For the benefit of anyone else who is suffering from AVG Free asking for a reboot after an automatic update I will log my ongoing thoughts and experiences here.

I was so annoyed with AVG that I switched immediately after posting the message above. The switch went fine. Avast took what appears (subjectively) a long time to to update itself though. It found a couple of virus traces in my email folders that AVG had missed. Later on I remembered that AVG had only started misbehaving after I updated Ad-Aware to the 2007 version. After my 30th Jan post I uninstalled Ad-Aware 2007 and thinking about it, AVG only started misbehaving again after I re-installed Ad-Aware 2007. So, I suspect that there is possibly an incompatibility somewhere between ad-aware 2007 and AVG Free 7.5. But I wasn't going back now!

So far I have noticed that Avast takes a tad more RAM but a lot less CPU. Idle used to show around 7% CPU it is now 2%. I have yet to do a boot time scan with Avast.

I have AVG 7.5 frre and Adawre 2007 installed, and have no problems. AdAware is the free edition (no realtime scanner)that might make a difference?

Playing the blues isn't about feeling better. It's about making other people feel worse.

I have only experienced AVG wanting a restart of my PC since updating to 8.0. I'm running XPpro sp2. Anyone else having this problem?
