Chris,

Good timing. I was only dimly aware of AVG. But yesterday, a client recommended it to me. This morning, I read a favourable review of it in a magazine. And now I see your message about the new forum.

Some kind of omen here, surely.

Mike

AVG's definitely worth considering seriously Mike, especially in the home environment. I have approximately 10 / 15 home users (friends and family) who have gone with it as part of a freeware security set (AVG, ZoneAlarm, VisualZone, SpywareBlaster, Spybot, Adaware) and AFAIK none of them have had virii problems. The update server can be a bit slow to respond first thing in the day on a business day (around 9am GMT) but I've yet to find a serious competitor at the price (£0).

Tazuk and Chris,

OK, I've now downloaded, installed and run the trial version. At first glance, I can't see much of an improvement over my previous virus checker (Sophos).

AVG seems to have a more complicated interface. Also, it took 25 minutes to scan my local drives, whereas Sophos takes 10 - 12 minutes. Then again, that's probably a good thing, as AVG might well be doing a more thorough job.

Of course, the most important point is how well it detects viruses, and I have no way of evaluating that.

I don't mean this to be negative. I'll certainly stick with AVG for a while at least. But if you can give me some insights into its benefits, I'd be glad to hear them.

Mike

Mike --

I can only compare between AVG v7 Free (installed on laptop) and NAV 2004 Pro (installed on Desktop).

The principal difference between the two (aside from subscription fees) seems to be (IMHO) the system overhead required by NAV - I frequently see messages when running applications that <application name> is waiting for a scan of <filename>.

I should perhaps further qualify my previous post. I tend recommend AVG v7 Free to friends / family where they are on a tight budget or tend to view AV software as a drain on system resources or "unnecessary".

I do agree with you that the user interface is somewhat complicated, particularly when it comes to setting up the email scanner for use with non-Micro$oft products (Mozilla Thunderbird for example). However I have found the online help forums useful, and setup is generally a once-only process as reconfiguration for a standard system is largely unnecessary.

As to more technical benefits, I'll leave that to those more in the know than I. The single controlling benefit from my point-of-view is that my laptop (and the PCs of friends and family) remain unaffected by virii. Of course any localised install of AV software can (in theory) be compromised by malware, so I always recommend regular scans using free online resources (Trend Micro, BitDefender, etc).

Tazuk,

Thanks for those useful comments. I must admit I'm getting used to the AVG interface now, and that I have got the hang of all the configuration settings. It's certainly a lot more complicated than Sophos, but it also gives you a lot more control.

I've also found that downloading updates is very much easier than Sophos.

I do agree with about doing supplementing it with regular scans with a free on-line scanner. I've used Trend Micro in that way in the past, and will continue to do so.

So, I guess I'll be staying with AVG, at least for a while. Now doubt we'll speak again in the new forum.

Thanks again,

Mike
