Does AVG anti-spyware require an exception to be added to the XP firewall? If so what, exactly please.

The reason I ask is that having relied totally on my router firewall I recently decided to turn on my XP firewall as well. I managed to set the exceptions correctly so that AVG (Anti virus) would update itself but I have failed so far with AVG Anti-spyware. Since turning on the firewall it won't update the definition files automatically. It's the paid, not the free version & AVG have so far failed to respond.

It doesn't auto update at all and if I try a manual update it just gets stuck at 'downloading update, receive data'

I dont run the XP firewall now (replaced with Comodo), but when I did there were no problems with AVG (Ewido) and no changes needed to be made to the windows firewall setup.

Well that would explain why setting it as an exception is making no difference. Unless I need to open a port? Or maybe it's a co-incidence and AVG are having some sort of issue or another?

The plot thickens.

It will auto update shortly after a re-boot. But that's it. After that it won't update again, even if I leave the machine booted for over 24 hours. It then updates if I re-boot.

I'm pondering whether a re-install would help?

Have you checked the updater settings?
One possibile settings is update after re-start.
You may need to set up a schedule to update at a specific time.

The only update options are how often it should check!

I downloaded the latest from Grisoft as I couldn't find the file I originally installed from - uninstalled it and re-installed.

When I re-booted I got ISASS.EXE - The endpoint format is incorrect !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After much fiddling around I have come to the conclusion that AVG Anti-spyware is now incompatible with the /3GB switch (which I need) Grrrrrrrrrrrr

I have notified Grisoft & await their response

Well they got back to me - & they can't reproduce the problem.

However.

Just as a mad idea I removed the /3GB switch & re-installed. Then went back to a restore point prior to uninstalling. Uninstalled - re-installed and re-applied the /3GB switch.

Unbelievably that worked. Also it is now auto updating correctly. I'm a bit gob smacked, but not complaining!
