I finally solved a long term problem in a DB I support quite by chance yesterday.
One database opened fine on two or more PCs, but if it opened on a third PC, or the third PC opened it ahead of other PCs then multi user access was prohibited.
They all had the same network permissions on the file, so it wasn't that.
I finally tracked it down: With the Access component of the Avery Wizard installed, any database is opened in exclusive mode regardless of the Default Open Mode set in the Access options. This particular database was being opened in Access XP with Service Pack 3, but it is likely to affect other version and service pack combinations.
Use Add/Remove programs to remove the Access component, or uninstall the toolbar altogether and the problems vanished completely.
I hope that this ends up being useful to somebody else.
