I work for an Avaya partner (telecom company) & Im thinking about approaching them to start an Avaya Certified Associate course... I have a basic undertstanding of VoiP and other telecom aspects already. How hard is an ACA qual??? I want to start a course which will get my employment OR lead onto other courses? Could you get a job with a ACA only??

Any input is welcome.

No such thing as an ACA or ACS anymore, they been replaced with ACIS (ACA) and ACSS (ACS), the ACIS is brand new and will be easy enough to pass but you will still need a working knowledge of the IP Office and associated apps not just a general voip/telephony background, aroung 1 yr's experience with IPO will be more than enough. T

he ACSS has been around a little longer but needs a more in depth knowledge and you need to have been working on the IP Office and apps for a couple of years to pass it (or just get lucky)

Cheers for that.... Interesting to know. Do you see having the ACIS cert enough to gain employment? I would look to better my quals but want a starting point.

Also, how common are Avaya engineer jobs? in other words is employment not too difficult.

@ DennyHeack, i have looked on there and it would appear that Network+ is really recommended before ACIS. Can anyone confirm this is right please??

No CompTIA or anything like that required, just use the links we provided. And jobs depends on where you are, ACA,ACS,ACIS or even ACSS means very little in my experience, it isn't the benchmark for an engineer in the same way the Cisco CCNA etc is. Experience and attitude will serve you better than any Avaya cert.....as with most things :)

Well Im based in Berkshire at the moment and work for telephony company (avaya dealer). Do you think that ACIS on its own won't really get me anywhere?? Would I get a job with it but not much experience...?

The ACIS as you will find will be rather easy to pass (I think some of my cutomers could probably pass it) it's by no means worthless and will maybe get you an interview, but it's not a way to push up your wage demands put it that way. Down south there tends to be more jobs going than up here, I just started a new job but that was just good timing more than anything :)

And I guess doing the Network+ couldn't hurt, the more you know the better, but I never did it :)

I did the ACA a long time ago and I found it more difficult than the ACS because it had more of the network basics in it and I was really green the time I did that in all Network related matter.
I did the ACSS as beta and it was really a lot more Avaya oriented brand specific knowledge than anything else.
If you know your networking and IP office well then I think you will be OK even without extra studying for the ACIS and the ACSS if you know the IP Office really well.
As for the jobs, I think that the certs are a welcome bonus for an employer but nothing you can't do within a few days if need be and your knowledge is good anyways.
Certs are paper knowledge and mean nothing in the real life scenario but are good for a business partner to show to Avaya that they mean business.

Thanks all... So if I did a Network+ and also ACIS (ACA) then I could do the ACSS afterwards? Will the ACSS (ACS) be good enough cert to gain employment?

Yes that one will do smoething.
But you need to have a couple of years experience to pass it.

When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!

honey, i fried the IP Office !!!

Sarcasm, it's only one of the services I offer.

I remember (back in the mists of time) doing my ACA and Comptia. The major issue was that they were very US centric (and the US and UK are *very* different in terms of telecoms - particularily trunking) Does any one knwo if this has changed - in the that ACIS is less locale specific?

Again - as I don't work with IPo everyday now - can you get an ACSS without the ACIS?

Finally, I3astards, may I suggest that you consider a name change - this forum is

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

The qualifications will help you get a "foot in the door", once you're at the interview though it's really down to you.

They are worth getting though as some employers view them as a prerequisite (i've worked for a few platinum resellers in the UK that do)

If your employer will pay for the training/exams go for it - if not maybe not worth the expense.

ACS - IP Telephony + IP Office
ACA - Too many to remember
ACSS - Would do it but i don't get a free TShirt anymore!

The ACSS exam can be taken without the need for a ACIS credential ( for now, this may change )

The Network essentials is not needed anymore in order to subscribe for a ACSS exam.

The ACSS is mainly Avaya oriented but still a lot US stuff AND if english is not your native language then some queations are hard to understand ( I am Dutch ( from Holland I mean;))) and i think my english is quite good but still I had problems with some questions.

For starters with IP Office ACSS is not reachable if you only study the contents and have no practical experience ( minimal one year is needed and you have to work with on a daily basis ).
ACIS will be hard enough to start with.

I totally disagree with the way Avaya has put the pressure on vendors that have come from Nortel. Many of us have had no recent Avaya experience. The pressure had been put on to get certified before an IPO had been sold. There is no question that Avaya should have allowed the vendors to get practical experience before asking them to get certified. It was a bad idea.
