AVAYA P1330/330 Switch-question

I was with an IT guy recently, and he was explaining something to me about a chip inside the switch that connects you to an IP so you can see all of the ports, etc.
Can someone explain how this works?
 
If you configure the P130/330 switches with an IP address you can use your browser to browse to the switch and it will give you a graphical display of the switch and allow you to make configuration changes through that graphical display. You will need to have java run time of at least 1.2.6 loaded on your pc to get the display. The switch will tell you that when you try to browse to it's address.
