i have an avaya ip406 with two expansion shelves giving me sixty odd phones. I also have another shelf with isdn lines on it but this seems not to work. On the bottom unit it shows that the expansion shelves for the phones are connected but not the one for the isdn shelf (plus on the isdn ports they are all orange). I have checked all cables and connections and they are correct, but i am not an Avaya geek in the slightest. Does anyone know of any commands i can type in/look at to find my problem.

You probably have a S08 unit
That is isdn but S0 and not T0 !!!After connecting the unit did you reboot the ipo ?

yeah basically, the exchanges worked, then they had to be moved, and now they all work except the isdn exchange. So in effect they were rebooted as they all lost their power. I have tried rebooting a few times but the 406 does not pick up the isdn exchange

You need to power all down, then power the expansion modules up first wait for the lights to steady out then power up the main unit. Also make sure you have connected them back in the correct ports :)

Maybe your expansion port is already programmed for another type of unit.
Try to connect the S0 unit to another slot like 4,5 or six and reboot the IPO afterwards.
If the S0 unit does not start to work then it may be a defective one or it has lost its firmware.
You can check that with a serial cable on the back of the S0 unit and a serial port on your pc, the use hyperterminal (38400,8,N,1) and reboot the unit.
If you get only en few lines during startup then the firmware is gone.
Even for a experienced engineer it is not easy to get firmware loaded once it is lost.
I have posted the way to do that several times and then i wrote a faq : read it and do your best
