I'm getting an error message in the status report that says "protocol version not supported". This is on sip trunks. should I be concerned or is it just informational.

it is most likely a codec that is setup in the SIP trunk. It will not harm you but is a nuisance.

check what you have in there and if g.723 and maybe g.711a are in there toss them out then try again.
If the error comes back maybe the trunk has trouble also with g.722

Don't know about other countries but UK PSTN doesn't support G.722 and I would expect that to say codec error rather than protocol error.

The error is a bit vague but could be a TLS negotiation issue, have you got SRTP set to preferred and your supplier doesn't support it?

Biglebowskis Razor - with all things being equal if you still can't find the answer have a shave and go down the pub.

I'll check the SRTP setting. Don't think in any case that it is causing problem, but I would like to know for sure.

Got a SIP trace? I wouldn't think it's a media thing, you'd just get a 488 Not Acceptable Here if you're only offering codecs the other side won't support, or if you're offering only RTP or only SRTP and the other side only does the other.
