Avaya IP office Softphone Without VPN

Without going into long detail on my part as far as what we have tried, has anyone successfully used the softphone client without having to VPN to a public IP forwarded to the IP Office. I have attempted several things, so if there are any suggestions other than it can't be done, it would be much appreciated.
