Hi,

We recently upgraded our old Partner II to a Partner 8 (with Messaging 7.0) through an Avaya Gold partner. The system itself seems to work fine; however, I want to be able to manage the system via the SMDR and Voice Mail (Messaging R7) RS-232 ports, for various reasons.

I do understand that the port on the phone is actually RS-232 through an RJ-45 jack. I have an adapter (RJ-45 to DB9F) I purchased that lets me determine the pin-out I want. It's pretty simple and is basically 8 wires leading from each pin on the RJ-45 side that go to specific pins on the DB9 end. It's nothing sophisticated.

The problem is, I can't seem to get the connection to work, and the technician who installed the system really doesn't know much about it. He simply uses the adapters supplied to him, follows directions, and that's all he knows.

I have a pin-out sheet for the processor (SMDR) port and the voice mail admin (RS-232) port. Whether or not the tech gave me the right pin-out, I don't know.

For the WinSPM (voice mail) port, I have the following pin-out on my RJ-45 to DB9F adapter:

Code:
WinSPM
RJ-45 DB9F
---------------
Blue Pin 9
Orange Pin 1
Red Pin 5
Black Pin 4
Yellow Pin 3
Green Pin 2
Brown n/a
White n/a

SMDR
RJ-45 DB9F
---------------
Blue Pin 9
Orange Pin 6
Red Pin 5
Black Pin 4
Yellow Pin 3
Green Pin 2
Brown n/a
White n/a

I'm assuming that pin 1 on the RJ-45 is the far right pin when looking directly into the RJ-45 plug. On my adapter, this is a blue wire, so I have to assume my blue wire is attached to the right DB9F pin.

When attempting to connect to the voice mail, I fire up HyperTerminal, set the given COM settings (19200, no hardware flow control, etc, etc) and go to connect. The problem is, I don't get anything. The cursor sits there, and pressing Enter doesn't do anything.

If I attempt to connect to the processor via the SMDR port with the SMDR software, I get connection error that there is no response. It seems the connection is not being made.

The original computer I was using to connect is a laptop with no serial ports, so I had a USB to DB9 adapter. I know some of these adapters don't do the best job of emulating genuine serial ports, so I tried another adapter and got the same results.

So, I tried an older computer that did have genuine, built-in serial ports (no USB to COM emulation), and got the same results - no response.

I even tried firing up my Linux machine with minicom and got similar results (on the voice mail module). No go.

I know the phone system itself is okay because the technician has connected several times (before and after my attempts)... all successful.

So at this point I'm not sure what to do next. I'd like to get this down pat so I know how to get into the system and how to work it, because our company has the same phone systems at other office locations, and I am going to be in charge of managing all of them (along with their computer networks).

Any suggestions or ideas to get this connection working would be most appreciated.

The system came with a CD that has the "Remote Administration Getting Started" document. In "Com Port Connection" you will see the cables needed and how to connect. You must use one of these adapters:

1. Avaya Partner 355 AF Adapter (RJ45 to DB25 Female)
Product #: 407590801
Manufacturer: Lucent/Avaya

2. Avaya 355A Adapter (RJ45 to DB25 Male)
Product #: 407590785
Manufacturer: Lucent /Avaya

Description: For use with Partner or Legend systems in SMDR or remote administration applications.

They are sold on the web, or you may find one on eBay.
The same adapter is used to connect to both the Partner system and to Partner Messaging.

Okay... I actually got this to work.

1) I used the SMDR pin-out, not the WinSPM.

2) I removed the USB to RS-232 drivers and let Windows "re-detect" the hardware. I also removed all other virtual COM ports (I had many).

3) I tweaked the properties on my virtual USB to RS-232 adapter so that the COM port was at #2 (COM2), not at COM10 like it was before (I have a bunch of virtual COM ports for Bluetooth and the like)

And it worked. I'm not exactly sure what the problem was, to be honest (I wish I did), but I was able to connect to the VM / messaging module in HyperTerminal with no problems.

I wasn't, however, able to connect to the processor. The Avaya software immediately rejects the connection. I may try direct dialing instead to see if that works.
