My client's professionally printed brochure is in font Avant Garde. I want to do their main heading as gif in this font. I dont have the font and dont want to buy just that one.

How do adding fonts work? I think I get a different list in Fireworks, Photoshop, or ms word, ie they dont all come from windows/fonts directory?

Is it worth getting any of those cheap cd's that say they contain heaps of clipart etc - any recommendations?

If you are willing to buy a clipart CD then why not buy the font?

Avant Garde is almost certainly available from free font sites. It just won't be called Avant Garde... but it will look the same.

I assume you are using Windows.
Fonts placed in the fonts directory are automatically available to any software running on the machine.
It is worth noting though, that the filename of a font will not necessarily be the name of the font and can sometimes be rather cryptic.

For instance, Avant Garde Book has the filename agw____.pfm.
Thankfully it is possible to view the actual font names of fonts in the fonts folder by selecting the appropriate file view.

However, it is possible to use a font management utility such as Suitcase or ATM to turn fonts on and off as needed. Int his case, they can reside anywhere on the system and be "opened" with the management software when needed.

These are useful if you have large numbers of fonts but don't need all of them all the time.
