Available space on DLT media

I am contemplating scripting a way to calculate available space on a DLT media/tape. Has anyone done this before? Any pointers.

I doubt anyone bothers. Due to hardware-level compression along with the variable compression rates you get with varying types of data, I don't see how one can really calculate the amount of space remaining on a given tape.

I use 3590s, and on some tapes I get 20G, on some I get 70G.

If you use some high level SW,like Legato,it will tell you how much space was used out of all available.
