My brother has AV Personal installed on his PC (Windows XP home)but for the past week or so he has been having problems. He gets the message "THE CRC SUM OF C\PROGRAM FILES\avpersonal\avwin.exe has changed". He is unable to remove the programme because it says that it is being used and he can't close the program down. He can't get into regedit to remove it either - it won't allow him.

Can anybody help please?

Thanks (as always)
Caroline

I would try to install a NEW version of AntiVir over the OLD and see if that takes care of the CRC problem...

to remove AntiVir, the SERVICE must be stopped before any attempt to remove the program...
and it is not easily done...

as there are actually two services controlling it...

both have to be removed firstly in the REGISTRY, then rebooted, so that they do not start up at boot time...

see under:

HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/AntiVirService
and
HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/AntiVirScheduler

Thanks but before i had chance to see your reply my brother rang to say he can't even get into windows now - not even in safe mode???? anybody able to help b4 my brother muders the pc?

Without more clues, things to try:-

1. Boot into recovery console (or from something like BartPe disk) and run chkdsk /r. Reboot and see if windows starts (if it finds anything to fix).

2. If that doesn't help, a repair reinstall (method 2):-

From the little clues we have, it could be a failing hardware, bad driver or virus/spyware problem (or just corrupted filestore, in which case option 1 will sort it).
