Some weeks ago I installed Norton 2006 Anti-virus on a PC (Dell Dimension 4400 1.7GHz with 256MB ram running XP Home) and it has been getting slower and slower until it is almost unusable.
I checked through all the services being run and installed programs and there didn't seem to be anything which would be hogging the system, so I uninstalled Norton and instantly it was back to a reasonable speed. It booted quickly, internet access was fast and in all ways it seemed a perfectly usable PC.
I then re-installed Norton and it immediately went back to being unusably slow.
Now, I realise in this day and age that 256MB of ram and a 1.7GHz processor is hardly cutting edge, but it seems ridiculous that Norton should have this effect.
Has anyone got any ideas on what can best be done?
Thanks.
