about TME10 Software Distribution
using Autopack to build package
1. Why software that I want only to be a package must be installed in prep machine too?
2. Can anyone help me about this situation?
- I built a package for Mcafee Antivirus (setup for Win9x) and distributed it to endpoint (Win98) --> OK, it work.
-Then I built a package for Mcafee Update, I try both normal install (updatefile.exe) and silent install (updatefile.exe /SILENT) and store package in different directory from Mcafee setup package directory
- Final, I distributed update package to endpoint, but result was version of Mcafee change to 0.0, what happend?

Thank you,

The prep machine is needed to capture what is needed in the Software Distribution configuration. Its like a customer supplying you with an InstallShield response script. They have already used a prep machine to get that for you. In this case the software distribution definitions are not generally available, so you have to generate that yourself using the prep machine.

Hope that helps.

SimonERM is correct. The prep machine is needed to capture the changes that are made to the machine after the desired software is installed.

Are you trying to apply the updates as file packages or autopacks?

If you are distributing it as an AutoPack, make sure that you are applying it first to the prep machine with the first McAfee version installed.

If you are applying it as a file package, make sure that no unattend/answer file is required, otherwise you may be overwriting something important.

it's correct that u have to capture the registry changes in the prep machines for the autopack, and to make sure that the prep machine is closest to the build level of the endpoints or managed nodes where u are going to distribute the Auto pack.
Abt the McAfee update.. for the Autpack u have to do the installation on the prep machine with the Mcafee installed and then build the autopack.. and distribute them. Incase u want to do the silent distribution u can edit the Autopack file and include that option as a flag or something which works with the Mcafee updates...

in case u are doing the File Packaging then u have to enclose the Response file and do some tweaking in the commit option in the File Package.

in case it helps please let me know...
