I have a table that conatians the line items for each Sales Order that is contained in a different table. What i want to do is have each set of line items be autonumbered either in the table or in the form so that when it gets displayed in a form you can see exactly which line of the SO it is.

I do not think you really mean "Autonumber"ed. This would be reasonably trivial - BUT the various line numbers on you forms/reports would NOT start w/ "1" and increment. To have the results be consistient, you would need to include the "line number" of each detail item at the time of entry. To have these always be the same and sequential, you also need to not allow deletions, so you also need some mechanisim to include items which were ordered and subsquently dropped from the order - but to indicate the item(s) were 'dropped' and to NOT charge for them.
