Autonum issue

does anyone have any ideas why a autonum column on a table would all of the sudden come up with an error? This system has worked fine for the last 5 years but on Friday and again today, when a user tries to update a record, it will not pull up the record on the 2nd screen because the autonum is storing -480321536 as its value instead of the next sequential number.

To fix the problem (temporarily), I
1. copy the structure to a new table
2. change autonum in the original table to number
3. find the correct sequence number
4. change the value to the correct number
5. select all the records in the original table
6. paste the records to the new table (which still has the field as autonum)
7. repair database

This seems to work but only for the short term so I'm looking for any ideas of how to troubleshoot this problem.
Thanks
