Automation server can't create object from IIS(?) 1

When I try to create a new ASP.NET project in VS.NET, I get the error message "Automation server can't create object" with an OK button.

Here are the files and folders that are created by the time I get the error message:

Folders:
bin <- empty

Files:
Name.vbproj
Name.vbproj.webinfo

I don't get an AssembyInfo.vb file or a default aspx form.

Any ideas? This did not used to happen. I did create a few projects before I got the problem. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled IIS with no effect.

What OS? What version of IIS?

I'm running it on Windows 2000 with IIS 5.0
