Automating Insertion of Multiple Blocks

I am using AutoDesk Map version 5 and require some help please. I have 2 drawing files - one is a schematic representation of a motorway and the other contains icons / blocks representing devices found along the motorway. The schematic diagram contains a text layer of strings comprised of a '+' sign indicating the insertion point, a reference to the block (ie the icon / block name) a primary token and a secondary token separated by colons.

What I am trying to do is automatically insert the relevant blocks at the location of the appropriate text strings in the schematic diagram, rather than to manually insert them as there are lots of them! I am from a GIS background so guess this should be possible, but am new to AutoDesk Map / AutoCAD, so have no idea whether it can be done.

Thanks in advance.

Yes it could be automated with a lisp routine (or other programming). The text with the '+ can be selected, the insertion points and the block names read, then the particular block inserted at each text insertion point (or offset to line up with the '+). Would have to first insert the symbol drawing into the other so the blocks would be available for inserting. May not be real simple to program but may be easier than the manual method. You could send me a small drawing showing a text string (at cabnospam@eeiteam.com -remove 'nospam') and I could assist with the lisp coding.
Regards,
Carl
