We an asset tracking have a program that uses an Access 2000 db as it's back end. Its help desk allows linking of tickets to computers by populating a field in the help desk table with the computer service tag. I would like to automatically populate a free field in the same table with the computer name from the computers table. Is there any way I can do this? I can modify the database but cannot change the program.

Doesn't the computer service tag allow you to look up the computer name? Are you sure you need to store the computer name in more than one table?

Are you using a combo box to select the service tag? If so, does the Row Source table of the combo box include the computer name?

My boss wants the computer name in the help desk table so he can include it in his reports. The front end application is an external program, not an Access application, so I can't make changes to there. It's rather old so there is no support available. The flexibility of the reporting module is limited. I'm trying to make chicken salad here from less than ideal raw materials. [smile]

I'm thinking of something like a SQL trigger or some event that fires on a change of the service tag field but I have no familiarity with Access beyond tables and queries.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

There are no triggers in Access tables. If you can't change your front end, you might need to regularly run and update query.
