I've just come out of a meeting in which documenting our C8 development so far was discussed and it looks like we're going to be duplicating a lot of information and put it into Word documents with all the usual issues of how do you keep the two in synch. It struck me that the Content Store is a database that holds much of the information we require such as report name, folder location, permissions, schedule etc. and all that would be required to generate the documentation would be to spit out this information as a report (I believe that this approach has been taken with Upfront in S7 but I haven't see it for my self - anyone done this?).

Has anyone tried this? Is this feasible or is there some fundamental problem. For example, report specifications are stored in the DB as XML. Is everything else held as XML or as traditional relational style records? Even if this information is held as XML it should be possible to 'parse' the XML and pull out the relevant bits. I know diddly about pulling XML apart - are there tools for this?

Cheers, TS
