I have WSUS installed on our intranet, and all seems well except that when the client PC's start up they are very slow for the first 30 mins or so when the Automatic Updates service runs to detect updates required.

SVCHOST.EXE takes 100% CPU during this period.

Is this normal ?

I've tried installing patches from Microsoft without any improvement. (
Thanks

Server - WSUS 2.0 on Windows 2000 Server (SP4)
Clients - XP Pro (SP2) and W2K Pro (Sp4)

It is at the moment, a lot of people are experiencing this problem. We have been reasonable lucky, most machines only experienced 2-3 minutes of the update process grinding their machine into the ground.

I reckon MS have altered the client code for WSUS3, and shafted it. You can manually download the automatic update client, this has been reported to help.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

thanks, you're probably right about MS & WSUS3. Where can you download the update client from? I had a look on microsoft site but no luck.

Thanks

Thanks again, but hasn't improved matters either

Don't know if this is coincidence or what, running a "wuauclt /detectnow" only hogs the cpu for a few minutes instead of the 30+ I was experiencing.

I have installed the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe on both Windows XP & 2k pro desktops and both now do show improvements.

now to install this on 90+ other machines!

Thanks

Just to add to this topic - the version 3 of the client with WSUS should be rolled out with your WSUS updates tomorrow.

Fingers crossed!
