We're currently using Project 2003, but will switch to 2007 soon. Do either of these have a facility for the software to automatically update the schedule based on both the current date and the entered percentage completion for each of the tasks?

For example: A task that was due to be started by now, but hasn't would be shifted by Project to start on today's date...

Hi - I don't think so. I beleive MS Project forces you to update the start date versus automatically moving it so you're aware of the change. If it were to just move any past due dates to the "today's date", you could have a lot of unintentional slips in the schedule.

Sure, piece of cake.

1. View > Toolbars > Tracking
2. Tools > Options > Calculation tab
look at "Calculation Options for <your project>" and "Move start of" (there are two options). Now click on the "Help" button and select the topic "Schedule adjustments for early and late tasks". Read and understand.

3. Project > Project Information > Status date
Set the status date.

Now, click on a task, click on the tracking toolbar button labelled "Reschedule work" (it's the third button from the left).

You'll need to experiment a bit until you understand what is happening.
