Automatic Update for Windows XP never starts

Hi,

I have a couple of XP Professional workstations sitting behind a firewall/proxy.

They are setup to go look for XP updates automatically everyday at 1:00PM and then install them.

They never do it!

However if I use IE from one of these workstations and go to there is a lot of updates available.

What should I check on the workstations?

Also has anybody experience similar problems with XP workstations behind a firewall/proxy (IE is setup to use the http proxy)?

Thanks.

Several notes:

1. You might consider using a SUS server;
2. You need administrator or member of Administrator Group priviliges to run the scheduled task. Look into the RUNAS feature of XP as a workaround.
3. See my "trick" to another user today having Windows Update Problems: thread779-632799

Trick # 3 did not do it.

I have Administrator right to the workstation and I am logged onto the workstation when the scheduled task is supposed to start.

Any other idea besides setting up a SUS server?

Thanks.

You really need to check the logs for the session. If you can post a fragment from the log that shows the failure point, (and it will clearly do so) it would help narrow it down.

I keep a link to a MS newsgroup thread that deals with Windows Update issues. There are thousands, but this seems to kick up the better stuff and is one of the longest running threads on the issue. See if browsing this thread generates some ideas.
There is of course the Windows Update Troubleshooter, which is very good. This is found by going to the Windows Update site and looking at the left panel.

My concern is that it is equally likely it is a Scheduled Tasks issue as it is a Windows Update site issue. Since you can go there without issue by hand, it strikes me that the task log will show whether the session started at all.

I should note that the Group Policy Objects used to direct downloads from a SUS server work perfectly well even on a standalone machine.

It might be better to resolve problems with the registry entries involved through Group Policy as a first step, even if you decice not to push the Hotfixes through the free SUS server.

I tried to rename the edb.log file or even rebuild it following
I also tried to install manually Q817287 and everything went fine (you will see it in the log below).

However after rebooting the workstation, the automatic update which is supposed to start at 15:00 does not start!

And now I am in front of my corporate firewall/proxy (with only XP firewall turned on) and it still does not start.

Any other suggestion?

Thanks.

I see a successful start at 15:01 on the clock, the download of:

The issue is whether the hotfix was subsequently installed. The windows update log does not show that. Look in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs to see if it is listed, or whether it appears in the first listings of your c:\windows directory as a protected folder.

Check this log for installation success or failure:

C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\iuhist.xml

I don't have the file you mentionned however is a fragment of the Windows Update log after I manually downloaded and installed the patch for the Blaster virus of Windows Update website.

Also that patch 823980 is listed under Add/Remove Programs.

My problem is that the manual update is the automatic update that never starts.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.
