Automatic Smtp server name detection

Ok - all you Network wizards..
How can I detect Smtp name on a Win2K box without having to burden the user with finding this in order to send a msg? Is there a magic api or entry in the windows registry That does not rely on a certain product?

you can implement your own SMTP client. SMTP is a TCP based protocol. You could find the structure of SMTP in

http://www.rfc.net/rfc2821.html.

So all you need, is to learn how to use TCP and to read the specification of SMTP.

I have my own Smtp Client - I just need to know what name to give it. I am asking the user enter his own e-mail Address so I have the domain name the client computer is in. I've experimented with :snQuery for MX recs but don't get the right results.

The software I am writing will go to a site where they will install it. After installation the software presents the user with a wizard. As part of this process the software to generates a lock code for the computer. This information must be e-mailed back with a request for licenses. I want to make this process as easy as possible. Many times the user does'nt know the name of the smtp server unless they know how to go hunting through e-mail setup screens.

the only way is to check configuration files, or registry configuration of the existent mail clients.
