I have a client running Windows 2000 Small Business Server.

They have the network/corporate version of Symantec Anti-virus. Recently, their exchange server died on them, which was successfully re-built.

The problem is the Symantec anti-virus service, within the services admin tool. It is set to automatically start up but it does not. When you manually start it, it goes through the startup process and seems to be started. However, when you refresh the window, the status of the service is blank, presumably stopped.

I thought of un-installing/re-installing the anti-virus program, but my client does not want to do it at this stage.

I had also thought that the installation of SBS may be a bit iffy. Any thoughts?

Go to the properties of the service and check the Log on tab. Is the log on using the Local System Account or other. Also check the dependencies. Make sure all dependant services are running.

Thanks for that, hiker0310, my client decided to go for the ininstall/reinstall. This seems to have sorted out the problem.
