Hi Everyone,
I have a project 2000 file with my projects and tasks are assigned to resources. I am using fixed work, therefore I have hours assigned to tasks and the duration can vary allowing for proper resource allocation. My problem is this. If I have a task that was set to 8 hours over 4 days, my resource has been allocated at 25%. Before the start date of the task, this is fine. If on the first day, the resource does not do any work on the task, I would like the 8 hours to show up redistributed over the balance of the days on the resource graph. So instead of showing 25% allocation for this task on days 2,3 & 4, I want it to now show 33% for those days. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance!

Of course it's possible to do what you want. But, first, you need to learn about the difference between "fixed work" and "fixed duration".

If you have a FIXED WORK task and no work has been done on the first day then the task must, by definition, have the same amount of work remaining. But since you have marked it as FIXED WORK, Project will not constrain either Duration or Units. Therefore Project will simply take the Finish date and move it out one day.

If you have a FIXED DURATION task and no work has been done on the first day then the task still has the same amount of work remaining but there is now a constraint on the duration which cannot be modified by Project. Project will hold the Duration constant and will increase the resource allocation to complete the task on time.

Hello PDQBach,
Thanks for the response. I was told to use the fixed work because originally, I was having a problem where if I entered 3 days as the duration it automatically set the work to 24hrs. Basically, it assumed 100% allocation for every task. Using fixed work corrected the problem. Anyhow, I did a test on a new project file and set it to fixed duration. I created a 4 day task, with 8 hours work, and a start date 2 days ago. The actual work is set to 0. But my resource allocation is still showing 25%, when at this point it should have bumped up to 50% because I only have 2 days left to complete the task. Is there another step in there that I am missing?
