I need to automatically configure the proxy settings in IE. We set them in our workstations but they often "disappear" and we have to make a trip back to the workstation to re-enter the proxy server address/port information. Researching the problem pointed to IEAK to solve it, but now that Ive downloaded it and looked at it, IEAK just seems to be designed to let me brand an ie install, not really accomplish what I need. It cant be that hard to automatically configure the proxy settings.

Ive found references to .pac (proxy configuration files) and .inf files for IEsetup, but no explanation of how to use them.

What do I need to do to accomplish this? I have mixed 4.0/5.1/5.5 IE installations, but can upgrade to 5.5 or whatever works. Any help would be appreciated...

Why don't you set up a script on the server with all the proxy info contained, then set up all the browsers to "use automatic configuration script"? Cheers,
Jim

That's exactly what i want to do, I just cant find out how to do it.

I know it must be simple... thats probably why i cant find any examples, because its so simple i should know how to do it.....

if you can tell me how to do it, it would be great...

Here's a way to "lock" the proxy settings in IE5 or higher:

Configure the settings to your liking, then:
Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft

Right-click on the Microsoft key, choose new>Key, name it Internet Explorer, right-click on that, choose new>Key, name it Control Panel. Right-click on that, choose new>DWORD value, name it Proxy and give it a value of 1.
This will grey out the box and prevent it from being changed. Give it a try on a couple machines and see that it works correctly.

i tried that registry change but it didnt seem to work on our machines....

I finally got the auto proxy .pac script to work, but I still have the same basic problem. The settings for the auto proxy are in the same location as the proxy settings. My problem is to have explorer auto configured when the user's settings are lost. If explorer is losing the proxy settings, I can only assume that explorer will also lose the auto proxy settings since they are in the same location. We are about to move our client server database to a browser system, everything is moving more and more onto the browser and I need to be able to configure every user's browser and insure that their settings are always there. I need every browser to always be exactly the same no matter what user logs on, no matter what machine they use, no matter what operating system, etc. How can I accomplish this?

thanks for any suggestions

Weren't all proxy settings greyed out after performing the registry modification?

no Ill try again but the settings were all still available even after making the changes...
