And many people consider the preview pane a security risk, it often results in messages being flagged as read that aren't and then if the user is configured to view only unread messages they complain about messages disappearing.
I don't agree with all those reasons either, but believe in giving the people what they want when possible.

Read receipts have no value, really, Users can read email without triggering a message being marked read or a read receipt being generated. And, a message being marked as read and/or a read receipt being sent does not indicate it's been read. A user can configure Outlook to never send read receipts, and can mark a message as unread after opening it. Thus - no tangible value.
Just an FYI, really. I spend my 9-5 in the email archiving space, including around eDiscovery, legal holds, email tracking, etc. So if the OP wants to circumvent some potential liability, the focus is in the wrong place.
