I am working on a long document that has two levels of automatic numbering. I want to keep the numbers, so I can't just turn off the automatic numbering, but they have to become part of the text, without renumbering themseves as I edit the document.

In other words, now that the numbers have been generated, I want to keep them just the way they are thank you, and stop altering existing/creating more, and let me do it myself!

Hope someone can help

Thanks

Not too clear on what you want. It sounds like you think that if you turn off the automatic numbering, your previous numbering will go away. Turning off the automatically numbering only applies to anything from that point forward.

To turn it off: Tool>AutoCorrect>AutoFormat As You Type. Make any adjustments by unchecking the box.

If you want to change the numbering sequence (say, start a new number), highlight one of the bullets in question. Select Format>Bullets and Numbering>Outline Numbered. Pick one of the bullet selections if it isn't already selected and choose the Customize button. You can change the bullet number from there.

Raynall: Unfortunately, if you have used autonumbering (or bullets) to create numbered items, and now need to have those numbers literally become text characters in your document, you will have to select that text and paste it into another document, then save that document as a text (*.txt) file, close it, open it, copy and paste the text back into your original document. Please realize that all of the newly-pasted text will have lost any other formatting as well--not just the numbering.

If you're giving this file to, for instance, a designer to use with Quark or some other design program, you'll probably be saving as text anyway.

If you've done lots of numbering and you just want to get rid of the autonumbering, pasting as text might be the quicker way---you'll have to decide that. Easiest way to fix that--select the newly pasted text and give it style "normal" or use format painter. And you'll definitely have to get rid of your autoformat as you type features, as Linda said.
