I am not very experienced in UNIX but I need assistance in automating file retrieval and comparison for Cisco routers. What direct instructions for scripting commands and tips would permit me to build this please? Failing that, what application might exist to perform this please? What reading material would be best to address these topics please?

You can automate ftp operations quite sucessfully - but I don't know anything about routers. Could you tell us exactly what you would like to do? (in terms of what file yuo need to retrieve/put, where, how often) Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

Cisco routers use a text file for their operating parameters. TFTP is the means to get a file in or out.

The idea is to create a type of version control and back up for the configurations. I'd like to see which files have changed from several points: overnight or other reasonable durations. With that one could drill down to see what changes were done to those updated files. We also need to keep "milestone" versions for roll-back if needed.

Have a look at faq80-772 which demonstrates how to automate ftp operations.

You can use the UNIX command 'diff' to compare versions of a file Mike
