We would like to automate the backup of Crystal Enterprise 9 Profressional nightly but are unsure how to accomlish this without restricting access, manually shutting down the services, and then manually backing up the product. Does anyone have any information on how we can accomplish this?

Thank you in advance for any help.

It is important to note that we have an MSDE database and not the full-blown SQL.

Why MSDE? not a great Db for an enterprise level reporting solution. It would be worth upgrading for many reasons, one of which being built in scheduled backups.

Anyway, you can still back up / restore MSDE via T-SQL (or OSQL) - dev effort but potentially "free" - otherwise there are 3rd party tools that will do the job, sorry I can't remember any names off the top of my head.

You would still need to revoke access to MSDE (i.e. kick everyone off) during the backup but the whole process can be scripted and should be very fast (seconds I would think).

Thank you for the advice. I've never heard of T-SQL but from my quick research it looks like a language. Are there resources for buying scripts to do what we need--I don't know how to write T-SQL scripts? If you happen to remember the third-party software packages, that would be a huge help as well.

Thank you again.
