Automate converting image files

I got a lot document image files (.bmp) that have pretty large file size. I want to convert them into smaller files in gif or png files. They are black and white so I do not care the loss of color. I can do this with MS Paint, but it takes time to do it one by one. Is there a tool that can automate the process, like converting all files in one foler?
