AUTOMARK ERROR

I am using Word2000 with WinXP. I am working in a Master Document. Attempting to generate an index. Clicked on INSERT, INDEX&TABLES, INDEX and then either MARKENTRY or AUTOMARK. Now I have paragraph marks and arrows all over the document. Even when I start a new document the paragraph marks show up. Please, how do I delete them from my Master Document and how do I delete them from new documents.

I am using Word 97, and on the toolbar there should be a "Show/Hide" paragraph markings buttons...

It looks like a reversed letter P somewhat.
