I need to autogenerate an "invoice number" on an invoice report.
That means each time invoice report is loaded it should show me next number for the invoice number
I have an idea of creating an unrelated subreport which accesses a stored procedure which returns the next number.
but i have no idea how to do this.
is there a simpler way to accomplish this?

Generally an Invoice number would be tied to some accounting function, so I would try to design the process to take advantage of that rather than using a reporting package to do this.

Perhaps at the time you ship or some such would be appropriate.

Otherwise you might generate an invoice number using some combination of the client number and date and time stamp which could be static, however it doesn't allow for saving this number readily, and again, is at the inappropriate point of the process.
