Ok, I've got AD domain of FOO.LOCAL Users email addresses are test@foo.com however.
So, when on a mobile device one must put in the email address followed by password then the device tries autodiscover.
The problem is that autodiscover.foo.com resolves however the UID of test@foo.com is not a valid login - it must be test@foo.local so autodiscover fails.
but, foo.local is not a valid internet domain... It appears I have a catch-22 here.

Is there any way for me to work around this?

That's not really needed. As long as you've set up correct DNS records for autodiscover, a user should be able to log into an account in an AD domain that's not publicly accessible (.local).

As long as autodiscover.foo.com resolves to the OWA endpoint correctly.
